I'm thinking of getting my husband an ice cream maker for Father's Day. Does anyone have any recommendations? We both have fond memories of our childhoods and the older electric ice cream makers. I can still remember the sound of the one my father hovered over.

I have been thinking of getting one myself. I want one with a pull-out freezer "core" so I don't have to fool around with the rock salt and ice.

My sister in law had one, but it seemed she had to use such high fat ingriedients, that the home made product was much more bad for you than the store bought stuff.

I don't know if you can use an ice cream maker to make sherbet or sorbet? She never did, so I don't know.

Now that she is on Weight Watchers, the ice cream maker was sold at a rummage sale.

Of course it's worse for you...that's why it tastes so much better.

Further South than I wanna be.
I remember growing up we had an old hand cranked wooden one. Us kids got the early turns, dad had to finish it. I just loved his home made banana ice cream.

My mother-in-law bought my wife and I an electric ice cream maker for a house warming gift. We both loved it. 5 years later, it's still in the same un-opened box that she gave it to us in. It's one of those gifts that you always want to have, but struggle to find time to use it.

You know what I hope my wife gets me for fathers day?... Naked!

I have a Cuisinart ice cream maker that uses the frozen core. No ice, no salt. It works great!

Anybody have a good sugar free ice cream recipe, that doesn't use splenda?

The very best ice cream freezer is made by White mountain. It is expensive but the best. Old fashioned wooden bucket. I wish I had one. We make homemade ice creasm several times during the summer. I haven a cheap "WalMart" variety that we got for a wedding gift years ago. Homemade Ice cream, IMO, should not be skimped on by using low fat/sugar free ingredients. Its a treat. Get the diet stuff at the store.

We are throwing a surprise party for my husband to celebrate his 50th birthday. He has been diabetic since he was 12, and the one food he remembers from childhood that he loved and can no longer have, is homemade ice-cream.

That's sad, Deppfan and so sweet of you to think of that. Have you check the web for a recipe. I have tons of recipes from Allrecipes.com and other websites. They might have what you're looking for. Question, though - how come you don't want Splenda?

Even though the splenda website says that the body doesn't recognize it as a sugar, every time we have tried to use it, his blood sugar sky-rockets. I swear, we call him Mr. 10. When the ads say 9 out of 10 people will respond a certain way to something, he will be the 1 who doesn't. Ice cream is tricky because of the natural sugars in milk, but I still want to try. I have a couple of recipes from the net, but wondered if anyone had one that they knew to be good.

Try using cream instead of milk. It has fewer sugars.

Have you tried stevia as a sweetner? They say it safe for diabetics since it does not affect you blood sugar. It is a natural sweetner. I get the one with fiber.

Bingo! He has a bottle of liquid stevia in the kitchen. I forgot all about that. With the stevia and the cream, I may come up with a pretty darned good ice cream. If so, I'll post the recipe for any other diabetics out there. Thanks!
