I have a sunflower with my college sorority's letters. Pregnancy was not kind to it.
I am waiting until I lose more weight and then I am getting a butterfly - it's a symbol of new life and organ donation. I really want a butterfly and have drawn it out myself, but I am afraid that the artist couldn't make it look the way I want. I chose the trinity for it's meaning and my heritage.

I got a red heart with a blue rose growing through it when I was 18, on my bikini line.
When I was 19 I got a bunny rabbit on my chest (high enough to show only that, but low enough to hide.)
When I was pregnant at the age of 26....they both grew quite a bit...then they shrunk quite a bit after the baby....not quite the same artistic effect after all that....

Both of my tatoos are on my lower back - both of them black. My first one is on my right side and is the Chinease symbol for Honest. My second one is on my left side and is the Chinease symbol for Dream.
I would love to get a third...however my husband feels I have enough ink.

Dip, Jenna Jameson has something similar with the words heart breaker thrown in there...hehe My first was on my foot. Chinese lettering on the side of it and curving upwards. To this day I haven't told anybody what it means.

My advice would be is know what you want and take some art work with you. That will help your tattoo artist vision what you are looking for. I got my first one 2 yrs ago for my birthday. It's a design across the lower part of my back and it's in color, blue, black and white. It hurt like HE!! but I made it through. He said because there was very little muscle & fat covering the spine it's bascially vibrating off the bone. Yeah- it hurt. The only thing about it, I sometimes forget about because I can't see it easily. When I got the tattoo everyone in my family was shocked (I would be voted least likely to get a tattoo out of the 3 kids my mom had ;)) I got another one in April of this year. It's a black cross with the years 03 & 06 on the sides of it on my hip area. It means a lot to me. My sister in law died in a car accident in 03 and my brother (her husband) died of cancer this year. I had the tattoo done on their anniversary so its my way of honoring their memory. It hurt a lot too- it was just awkward and it was hard to keep the skin tight. I don't think I'll get another but you never know!

I guess I'm just old school and I'm only in my middle 40's. I just don't want to permanently place anything on my body that I can't have removed - easily. I certainly don't look down on people who have them (at least I hope I don't - my husband has one (on his calf) and my step-daughter has at least 3 (that we know of, but she'll only tell us where 2 of them are), they're just not for me. My body has changed so much over the last 20 years I can't imagine what one would look like now and I wouldn't want it to show when I'm wearing a skirt or shorts.

I got one of a lizard with spots on my right shoulder about 5 years ago. I sometimes forget that it is there. It's black, and smaller then a baseball. It did kind of hurt when I got it, but like someone else said, it never hurt TOO much and he stopped right about the time I was going to get fed up. It was kinda cool to feel my bones vibrate down to my elbow.
My sister has one on her back of an angel, but the angel's face is my nephew. She brought in a picture, and the guy was able to replicate it on her. It really looks like him too.

Ahh, I remember my first (and only) Tattoo fondly.
He was a fine little midget.
Eventually, Mr. Rourke asked for him back.
