Why should they? I don't think they should because I don't see any good from it. Imagine the burden she has placed on her family now. They will always have to be helping her. I'm not saying they shouldn't have before, but now it may make it harder. Plus imagine the impact on her kid's lives. If she has any.

I agree that it is probably a burden on her family, and so it probably wasn't warranted in this case. But if she were living by herself and wanted to cut herself or do whatever, I see no problem with it. I disagree with helmet laws for the same reason, Darwinism at it's best!

I think it should be you own decision on wether or not to wear seat belts and helmets.

Actually, I imagine she is less of a burden to her family now that she's happier with herself. After all, this is something she's wanted since she was 6 years old. If she had not acted on the need (strange as it may be to the rest of us), I think the disorder would've consumed her life.

You're right, but don't you think that it would have been wiser to go forward with it before getting a husband (and children) who was apparently initially unaware of the condition?

She is more of a burden on your family. Sure she's mentally happier, but now she is physically disabled. They will have to assist her for the rest of her life and it will only get worse once she removes her other leg.

I think it would've been wiser if she had been more honest about her condition before they got married. She's very lucky if he truly loves her for who she is, and is willing to support her through the ordeal. It's unfortunate that maybe there wasn't anyone who could help her deal with this condition earlier in life.

Maybe she wants to get into professional baseball. If she gets rid of her other leg and both arms, she can try out for second base.

Not everyone is limited by physical disability; lot's of handicapped people live "normal" lives. I think the point of the story was that she felt more disabled by having her legs; that seems to be the nature of the disorder.

Actually, they'll be able to roll her everywhere. She already has a wheelchair and learned to walk with crutches.

I find these responses as odd as the original story.

Actually everyone that is physically disabled is physically disabled. She can live a normal life, with crutches, wheelchairs, ramps and lots of help from everyone around her. If she is really seeing a mental health professional...then I'd ask for my money back.

I am baffled at how a group of people (psychiatrist, her husband and her parents) can sit by and watch this woman mutilate herself so that she feels happy. Seriously, they need a group rate somewhere.

How exactly is getting a tattoo fundamentally different from cutting yourself? In fact, there is even a type of tattoo that involves just that, forming a picture out of scar tissue. I don't think I would want one, but that's why I don't get one on my own body. Others can do with theirs what they please.
