I was reminded of this by a thread over on the "Security" page, and the "Another BOL Concern" thread here.

Have you tried putting your (listed) home phone number (format ddd-ddd-dddd) into google.com?

It will respond with your home address, your name, and link you to map services that will show exactly where you live!

There is a link on the results page where you can remove your number from the Google database.

I tried this, but I don't see a link to remove my number from the database.

If you click on the little telephone you get a page that provides a method to be removed from the database.

Click on the telephone icon to the left of your name. Then scroll down to just above where you see "google scout." There's a link there that takes you to the "opt out" page.

Of course, this takes care of only Google. There's another score or so of reverse number directories that come up with your name and address. And if there's not a link right there that will map the location, anyone can type the address into mapquest or yahoo maps or expedia, etc.

So, if you don't want people to be able to track you down, get an unlisted number, or cell phone only, or get the phone company to omit your street address from your listing.

I was not in Google But I checked another reverse look up and I was in that one, asked to be deleted. Thanks for the tip.

I agree with MagicBanker (can you put my problem regs in a disappearing trunk). This is a tip and an entire iceberg is below you.

The difference is that the Net has made commonly available information more accessible. But there are still others out there doing the same thing. You can feel good about what you do, but don't consider it secured.

That is one reason this is the information age.

I'd have to agree with MagicBanker too. However, you can go to the extreme, as I have, and have a completely private number. I even have privacy manager that people with a blocked number, private number, or telemarketer can't get through unless I accept the call. It has been WONDERFUL, of course you do have to pay for it.

Get an unlisted number and that will take care of the nosey rosies. Mine is unlisted and it's not in the directory!

Mine was unlisted, then it was in the directory. I called and said "that seems to me to be more listed than unlisted" to which they agreed and refunded my cost for an unlisted number.

If you are more comfortable doing what you can, go for it.

I did the Google thing, and discovered that the local Boy Scout Council has my husband and our home phone number listed because he is one of the district volunteers. It comes up four or five times that way. So much for deleting it using our personal info. by clicking on the telephone to the left of our names.

After being stalked by a client for two years...I learned it's worth the expense. Unfortunately my entire family had to do the same to get the freak to quit calling anyone with a similar name.

I now live with po boxes, cell phones and unlisted everything. (But someone could probably find me if they tried)

I also have what I like to call the "Do not call me" cell phone plan. Its the most basic plan that I could get.

At least you don't live in po boxes, like many customers seem to do

No, I USE one for personal mail. I actually operate my business out of the other one. Man was it hard to find a desk small enough!!!!! Oh and trying to hide in it whenever the postal people go bonkers....what a contortionists nightmare!
