I did my taxes last night...I'm getting a decent refund, but that's because I use it like a savings account; I don't list any dependents.

We owe, but not nearly as much as we did last year. Thank goodness.

Owe a small amount to each, less than $130 total, by design.

I forgot all about my taxes! I need to take care of that! I always e-file and have the refunds (small as they usually are) direct deposited to my account.

e-filing is pretty awesome! I did mine last night. I bought a house Saturday and wanted to make sure I have cash on hand for settlement.

Already got my federal refund. One week after I filed it was deposited into my account. I can never find a free state e-file and I refuse to pay anything when all I need to do is copy all of the information over the state forms. I mailed the state forms in the old fashioned way...we'll see how long that takes

Try this site taxact.com. I was using H & R blocks online filing and paying $40 for both federal and state. A friend put me on to this site where I pay half that for federal and state.

I e-filed and received both state and federal returns within a week.

I used H&R Block free file for Fed. They wanted $30 for the state. That's a joke, considering the state forms tell me which lines to take the numbers from on the federal forms so that they can be properly transferred...
Mine are fairly simple, so I don't have anything else affected by the state.

I know many states are like that. You think they would encourage people to e-file by not charging a fee, (especially those with relatively simple taxes) to speed up the process... There are a few free files thru the state, but the income and age restrictions are ridiculous...

Someone is making money on transmitting those forms to the government as an intermediary - I doubt the gov't is seeing any of that money. I don't like paying the filing fee, but I like the speedy refund.
Plus, you can write off the preparation and filing fees.

And someone explain this one to me. If you don't take the standard deduction and itemize your deductions any refunds are taxable the next year in NY? So they are taxing you on money that if really yours and you've overpaid to them...

I ususally use Taxslayer to do my taxes. You can e-file fed & state for just $9.95. I haven't used it this year yet, but the fee has been the same for the last several years.
We claim 0 year round and have a lot to itemize, so we usually get back a very good refund each year.

Still do my taxes by hand and mail-in paper forms. I had to complete a four-page worksheet to find out that I only got a $1,950 child tax credit instead of $2,000 for my two kids...what a bunch of @*%$^!
