It's an excellent idea, so long as the chicks are hot.

In this college town, these students end up wherever they happen to crash the night before anyway so what's the difference? They are legal adults, even if they don't act like it, and should be perfectly capable of making that decision on their own. I'm happy I commuted through my college years because I know I would not have made it if I was shoved into a dorm room with another female. I prefer the company of guys, women tend to get on my nerves because at that age especially, they tend to be too into every little thing that comes along.

"But some observers say the policies promote promiscuity and represent political correctness run amok. And most colleges do not believe coed rooms are wise and see no reason for them."
Yup. If you want to live in a coed room, get an apartment.
college students are promiscuous or not, housing has nothing to do with it. Take your prudish ideals back to Quaker times...

What if your same sex roommate is homosexual? Doesn't that promote promiscuity too? Only if you are too! Otherwise I'd say there's no chance - although you know college chicks and alcohol Seriously, who cares? All parties are legal and if they wanna sleep together they'll find a way - even in the dorms...

I can't access the link here at work. . .is this talking about randomly assigned roommates, or is this selecting your own roommate? I can't imagine that there would be too many women lining up to be assigned a random male roommate when you have no idea what kind of creep you might get! You're still taking your chances with a random same-sex roommate, but this could reach a whole new level of creepiness.
When I was in college (graduated in '91), this would have been out of the question at my university. Heck, we still had one all women's dorm that had a floor referred to as the "virgin vault." No men were allowed onto that floor, ever. Not even fathers when they moved their daughters into school. I always wondered if any of the women chose to live there, or if their parents chose for them, in some misguided attempt to "protect" them.

My college would assign same-sex roommates, but if people were choosing their own roommates then co-ed was no problem. One of my classmates was married, and he lived with his wife in the dorms. I also knew people who lived with friends of the opposite sex, even if they weren't a couple.

you have no idea what kind of creep you might get! Weird, but each year I could always read something like this in my roommate's eyes as he met me. I hadn't thought about much until now. Is it possible others find me odd?

Okay - you've convinced me - Kid wonder lives at HOME when she goes to college! ARGGHHhhhhhhh!
I worked full time and attended college at night so I never had the dorm experience. I paid the rent and it was my place - so my choices were mine alone and not sponsored or paid for by my parents.
