We are currently reviewing our procedures used to identify deceased account holders to avoid accepting payment of government checks after death and for proper state reporting. Now that we are located in 5 states, it is too burdensome to review obits in the local newspapers. Contractually our customer is obligated to notify us if someone on the account dies. (Of course single owner accounts would have a hard time with this.) All our state laws and the reclamation rules indicate the we must have in place procedures that are "reasonable industry standard." Just wondering if you all could help me define reasonable industry standard?

We just completed a review of our process and created new procedures to address the issues you mention. If you are interested, I can email them to you. I can't define "reasonable industry standard" but this might at least give you something to compare to.

I am interested in seeing your deceased procedures as well. I started revising ours, but as usual they ended up in a "to do" pile, again. My e-mail address is

Just hoping you could share your deceased procedures you came up with. It would be nicer than reinventing the wheel. Thanks.

Would also like to get on the list for the procedures. I developed some "standards" in compliance with the NJ laws but need to revise them.

Thanks

Debbie - from the looks of things I think your procedures are going to BECOME the industry standard!

Here are a couple of questions regarding whether account balance information can be provided to the administrator (son) of a deceased customer's estate.

1) In a savings account which was joint with his unrelated caretaker.
2) In an IRA where the caretaker was named the beneficiary.
